Im young and professional, where do I go?

The Brooklyn, which is located at 1186 Queen Street West, competes for the attention of the hipsters and trendy young professionals that fill the area. They must offer something great if they can compete with The Gladstone and The Drake. This place boasts good music, good people, and good times. Although when I was there it was rather empty, but to give them credit it was a cold Friday night. So what’s the place about? Inside is nice with booths lining the wall and a bar that has people circled around like an upside-down horseshoe. Prices are your average fair and service is good. We scouted the place out for an upcoming birthday celebration and decided it was a good spot because the downstairs is perfect for a social gathering. It's for ages 23 and up so keeps that in mind if you're looking to go as a group. Whats great is that the music isn’t 'in your face loud' where you cant here each other speak, and the back wall is lined with stone and red lighting: a perfect atmosphere if your getting a booth and bottle with some friends and their invites. In short, it’s a seasoned hipster or dress shirt and tie kind of place.

A unique Spin on the bar scene

Spin is a 12,000 square foot ping-pong night club/bar located at 561 King street west in Toronto.  A new twist on Toronto nightlife! As soon as you walk in, the retro vibe and neon lights amerce you as you make your way to the tables. Two bars are located in the center of the ping-pong action. The beauty about spin is that it’s not a typical Toronto bar; a great location for friends looking for a different type of fun night out. Even bringing a date to this bar would be a new twist on the typical bar scene. Overall it’s an engaging environment where two or more people can compete and drink at the same time.

Drink prices range from 5-10$ and the atmosphere is stellar and hip.  When I first was informed about a ping-pong bar named Spin, I was skeptical. How could this compete with the tried and true “safe” bar scenes offered already in the city? It’s one of those bars in the city that you have to go to understand why it’s so amazing. With 12 ping-pong tables, cocktail menu, full food menu, lounge bar, and a private party room all under one roof: Spin is the place to be. They also offer nightly events and tournaments for all types of players.

The Frat House

The Frat House
By: Tyler

Yes the frat house is and should be considered a part of Toronto’s night scene for many reasons other than just the history behind them. To this day the houses that are in the Annex, which surround St. George subway station rage into the night with university students and college students from all over Toronto.  Unless you go to the school, it isn’t the easiest to find out how to get into one. But then again it’s just a bunch of students slurping down beer that tastes awful, so you’re not missing a lifetime experience. For someone who has never been to one and is still a student, there is a certain allure to the coveted frat party. Considering if you have ever watched American Pie you have this picture in your mind that it must be epic. How to get into one? Yes, you still need a connection and in this city that shouldn’t be too hard, but at the same time, you can for the most part just show up at the door with your student card and your good to go. A frequent question is if you can be from a different school, and the answer is yes you can be from a different school; I have been to many and haven’t had an issue. For a list of the frats that I know of they are here: Beta, Alpha, Theta, and Phi Gamma Delta. It’s rather interesting the amount of history behind fraternities and sororities, what they mean, and the goals they are to achieve. I’ll post a link to Wikipedia, which describes the different chapters and lists all the recognized fraternities and sororities in Canada if your interested.

Bar 244

Bar 244
By: Anthony

Toronto has over 10 different university and colleges within the GTA. With that come thousands of students on a budget.  Students on a budget need places to let loose and unwind after hectic weeks of lectures and tutorials. Bar 244 is known for two things: being one of Toronto’s best cheap drink and party bar. With drinks ranging from3$-5$ and cover free before 11pm on Friday and 11:30 pm on Saturday (with guest list), Bar 244 offers the best bang for your buck in the city.

Bar 244 is divided into two sections and is located at 244 Adelaide Street West, in Toronto. As soon as you walk into the venue the best idea is to hit the upstairs bar and grab a few shots. The bar becomes crowded quick and has multiple televisions usually showing the latest sports game. It’s a rocking environment that is accompanied by great hip-hop and top 40 geared for students and young adults.

Downstairs is the dance scene, be mindful they only open it up around 11-11:30. If you love great music to dance too and you’re on a tight budget this is good place to check out. It’s also right next to Gracie’s, Cake, and Tequila Jacks. A bar on the right is located to hydrate your needs as you tear it up on the dance floor. One thing to be mindful of is the lower section of Bar 244 has the potential to cram up quite quickly. So come early.  A really big plus is that they offer a reasonably priced bottle service with a secluded platform that won’t have people walking in and out as they circle the venue.

Overall Bar 244 is a young adult student bar that offers exactly what students and young adults want; cheap cover, really cheap drinks, and dancing.

The Top Seven Places to Hide Out and Have a Beer

By: Tyler

1) First on our list is The Only CafĂ© located conveniently near Donland’s station at 972 Danforth Avenue. This place has one of the best craft beer selections in the entire city ranging from bacon flavoured stout to their most expensive bottle of beer, which is about $40. As the East Enders secret, it’s combined with a neat cafĂ© directly beside the bar with a curtain separating the two rooms; this place is a great hide out if your with buddies or your date. If you would need a better excuse to go I’d say check it out on Sundays, they offer $5 pints for everything on tap.

2) Second would have to be a place I discovered walking from College to Queen late one night. The place isn’t easy to find as is the butterfly it’s named after, The Monarch is the closest place in the city that would leave you feeling like your in a safe house or back in the Jazz age. Located in the middle of a residential area at 12 Clinton Street, it offers a really warm and close atmosphere. Plus every patron there hasn’t had the luxury you’ve had, they had to find this gem the hard way: self-discovery. Upstairs is a single well kept pool table, your standard bar affair and sports on TV, plus a great pinball machine! The best part is you look down over the street through old wooden double hung windows and see a quite neighbourhood, which is just different considering it’s Toronto, but in a good way. A good selection of beer, awesome $4 fries, a sweet pool table, and a secure atmosphere. What’s more perfect for a quite night?

3) Next on our list is a book that’s always judged by its cover, and I completely understand why because I use to judge it by its cover. And let me tell you, its cover sucks. But if you are willing to give it a chance, the place offers one of the most relaxing atmospheres of any bar I’ve seen. Lets just start with they offer free popcorn, provide super comfy leather couches, and of course another pool table (its not the best) but that isn’t the point. Located near the Future Shop at 54 Dundas Street East, The Imperial bar is perfect for an after work place to have a beer and some food that will not break the bank but most importantly, it wants you to feel at home… literally. Quite background music, nothing fancy at all, just some couches with free popcorn and a crowd that’s there for the same reason; I just want to sit back, relax, and have a beer. When you are ready to go home the subway is right beside you.

4) This place isn’t cheap and they charge downtown prices. However, they’re located smack dab in the middle of the beaches so they can get away with their pricing. At the corner of Kingston and Queen Street East, Murphy’s Law Irish Pub has one of the best rooftop patios you can find and it comes with an awesome view of the city, Woodbine Park, and the ladies. Hit this place on a Tuesday when they have wing night and if you’re with a date you can hit up the movie theatre across the street for their discount movie day (Beaches Cinema). Spectacular chicken wings, your standard selection of beer, and again awesome chicken wings. This place is meant to be during the spring and summer. My only issue with the place is the high employee turnover can lead to some questionable service.

5) Up next on our list is located near Spadina station at 296 Brunswick Avenue and no it’s not the Madison or The Brunny, but instead it’s called The Green Room. This place has a really cool back alley entrance and is bumping during the summer months. They have a really cool layout with a really awesome hidden patio, and two floors lined with booths, couches, and tables. Is anyone up for Sangria Sundays? Although I have yet to try it, it looks amazing. And they have awesome sweet potato fries too; mix that with a pitcher of Blanche de Chambly and your set for a night of good drinking.

6) The Town Crier Pub & Halfway Beer House located at 115 John Street might be a bar that you’ve never heard of but if you have been in the John and Adelaide area then you’ve probably past it. This place is just across from the Hooters and they offer not only a really unique and pleasant atmosphere, but also have over 50 draft beers on tap from around the world. From other reviews, the food is good as I have yet to try, however, this place is really good if you just want to sit and try something new. They have the main floor set below ground, is dimly lit, so it offers a very traditional pub feeling. If you have just come from seeing a film at the Scotiabank theatre and fancy a drink you should check this place out!

7) Last but not least is Sarah’s CafĂ© & Bar located at 1426 Danforth Avenue with Greenwood as the closest station? Get off at Coxwell, and you won’t have to walk by a stretch of sketchy bars that are just outside Greenwood. Is it a one hit wonder? No, but it’s a local hot spot for sure. And during the summer they have an awesome patio that works either for a mid morning cappuccino or afternoon drinks with friends, or a date. Having previously worked at The Cyclepath Danforth just down the road, I was able to check this spot out a few times. They offer your average drink list, great food; actually their fries come in a really cool spiral cone, and a sweet patio.

Top ten, top five, and top seven what’s the difference? These are some great spots that are located throughout the city so no matter where you are, there is no reason to say there isn’t a good bar near you.
